Whatever It Takes

WHATEVER IT TAKES

How much do you want it? - Whatever it is - Again: How much do you truly desire it? It "it" a pressing need? A driving hunger? An unrealized dream?

If your heartfelt, lump-in-the-throat, wild-eyed answer is a raspy "I have to have it," then be prepared:

1. To pull out all of the stops and pull in all of the markers;

2. To accept that you are on a mission...or perhaps a quest;

3. To vow to yourself that you will absolutely not be stopped and will not quit until you've gotten it;

4. To put all other things second;

5. To find your allies and identify your enemies, but to understand that you are ultimately alone with your choice and your fate. But take comfort in that your fate is largely what you choose to make it.


Do whatever it takes. Do not leave this life with your book unwritten and your song unsung. Do not let anyone else discourage you, or deflate you or scorn you for wanting it (whatever it is) so much that you seem obsessed; or perhaps even possessed. You must defy inertia, other people's negativity, and your own fear to get what you desire. The only way to repay the vast indebtedness that your life owes your heart is by finishing, or by dying in the process of getting there.

Champions are not made by accident. Champions are made by fulfilling a pledge to themselves.

If you want it badly enough, you will do WHATEVER IT TAKES. If you deny yourself, the whole world loses.

Damn it all. Do it.

Admittedly, the article which follows is not particularly scientific, nor is it truly correlative. As statistician and risk assessment expert Franco Oboni, Ph.D., a Featured columnist for THE NATIONAL NETWORKER Newsletter would say, "Correlation does not imply causality." He is quite correct.

 

That having been said, I believe that the FORBES article cited below does, at very least, cite a number of factors that tend to work in favor of your being successful. The article does not expound on the virtues of work ethic, tenacity, brilliance, or any of the other customary "success jive." It has utility in that 1) it is quite interesting, and 2) it dispels some very popular myths about becoming successful -- many of which were repetitively programmed into us by well-intentioned mothers and dads.

 

I believe that it very important to dispel myths -- they tend to lead ambitious and otherwise promising young people down futile paths.

Are billionaires born or made? What are the common attributes among the uber-wealthy? Are there any true secrets of the self-made?

We get these questions a lot, and decided it was time to go beyond the broad answers of smarts, ambition and luck by sorting through our database of wealthy individuals in search of bona fide trends. We analyzed everything from entrepreneurs' parents' professions to where they went to school, their track records in the early stages of their careers and other experiences that may have set them on the path to extreme wealth.

Our admittedly unscientific study of the self-made members of the Forbes 400 yielded some interesting results.

First, a significant percentage of them had parents with a high aptitude for math. The ability to crunch numbers is crucial to becoming a billionaire, and mathematical prowess is hereditary. Some of the most common professions among the parents of Forbes 400 members (for whom we could find the information) were engineer, accountant and small-business owner.

Consistent with the rest of the population, more American billionaires and near-billionaires were born in the fall than in any other season. However, relatively few of them were born in December, historically the month with the eighth-highest birth rate.

Of the 274 self-made tycoons on the Forbes 400, 14% either never started or never completed college. The number of precocious college dropouts is highest among those who forged careers as technology entrepreneurs: Bill Gates of Microsoft (MSFT), Steve Jobs of Apple (AAPL), Michael Dell of Dell (DELL), Larry Ellison of Oracle (ORCL) and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook.

Forbes 400 members who derive their fortunes from finance make up one of the most highly educated sub-groups: half of them have graduate degrees. Roughly 70% of those with M.B.A.s obtained their master's degrees from one of three Ivy League schools: Harvard, Columbia or the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business.

Goldman Sachs (GS) has attracted a large share of hungry minds that went on to garner 10-figure fortunes. At least 11 current and recent billionaire financiers worked at Goldman or one of it subsidiaries early in their careers, including Edward Lampert, David Tepper, Daniel Och and Leon Cooperman.

Several Forbes 400 members suffered bitter professional setbacks early in their careers that heightened their fear of failure. Pharmaceutical tycoon R.J. Kirk's first venture was a flop--an experience he regrets but appreciates. "Failure early on is a necessary condition for success, though not a sufficient one," he told Forbes in 2007.

According to a statement read by Phil Falcone during a congressional hearing in November 2008, his botched buyout of a company in Newark, N.J., in the early 1990s taught him "several valuable lessons that have had a profound impact upon my success as a hedge fund manager."

Several current and former billionaires rounded out their Yale careers as members of Skull and Bones, the secret society portrayed with enigmatic relish by Hollywood in movies like The Skulls and W. Among those who were inducted: investor Edward Lampert, Blackstone co-founder Stephen Schwarzman, and FedEx (FDX) founder Frederick Smith.

Many of the list's drop-outs made their fortunes in tech, including Bill Gates (Microsoft), Steve Jobs (Apple), Michael Dell (Dell), Larry Ellison (Oracle) and Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook).

Skull and Bones

Several current and former billionaires rounded out their Yale careers as members of Skull and Bones, the secret society portrayed with enigmatic relish by Hollywood in movies like The Skulls and W. Among those who were inducted: investor Edward Lampert, Blackstone co-founder Stephen Schwarzman and FedEx founder Frederick Smith.

Goldman Sachs

A stint at investment bank Goldman Sachs is a prime credential for achieving greatness on Wall Street. Of the 61 tycoons on our list who derive their fortunes from finance, at least six cut their teeth in Goldman's investment banking, trading, or asset management divisions. The company's crown jewel: its "risk arbitrage" unit, which launched the careers of billionaires Edward Lampert and Daniel Och, as well as former billionaires Tom Steyer and Richard Perry.

Comment by Douglas Castle:  Author Paul Hoyt has written a truly inspired and inspiring book, soon to be published and released. A copy of his correspondence to Author Ann Sloan (of The National Networker Newsletter) and myself follows. Paul's letter, in turn, is followed by my response to him. Incidentally -- I would advise watching the news (and the skies) for information about Paul and this very timely, very different book. I had a great session with an intuitive this morning and opted to change the book's subtitle. “Lessons” and “Enlightenment” seemed a little too harsh for her, so the book is now titled:

“Becoming the Angel Within – The Practice of Awakening”

I like it because 1) I practice Awakening all of the time, and 2) it seems more humble and accessible. Hope you like it too, but I remain flexible.

Dear Paul:

I greatly endorse your change of subhead for the Book's title. The new term is less seemingly pompous, and speaks more of the inherent potential lying asleep within each and all of us as Human Beings. I believe that the term "awakening" is much more broadly applicable, reader-friendly and auspicious.

Awakening permits us to experience life with greater depth and breadth. Most of us are hideously unaware that we are wasting our waking lives in a state of robotic somnambulisminstead of experiencing it proactively, in amazing, multisensory detail. Our "default" setting, lamentably, is to revert to subconscious patterning and programming, and to re-live the limited past instead of savoring the present in its fullness, and anticipating the unlimited future, with all of its potential.

Ironically, our greatest dreams and ideas are produced and developed while we are either in the process of awakening, or while we are actually awake. The processes of learning and growth are subsumed under the greater metaphysical and physiological process of awakening.

A hypnotherapist is apt to experience a very unusual response when bringing a client out of a medium-depth trance by using the technique of counting backwards (progressive re-emergence) and inserting the seemingly paradoxical command "Awake and dream."
